Julia Ann Herridge of John

HERRIDGE, Julia Ann
Born: baptized on 09 October 1879
      Died: about 1899-1900
      Father: John Herridge
      Mother: Sarah (Caines) Baker
      Children:
[1] Arthur Albert Herridge, born 1897 at Lobster Cove

Note: Arthur Albert Herridge was raised by John Herridge, brother of Julia Ann, and his wife Jane Thornhill. Arthur knew only his mother’s name and that she had died when he was about two years old. His father’s identity was not known, although there is a possibility that his father was a Thornhill, perhaps related to “Uncle Albert” Thornhill. There may have been a reason why Albert was Arthur’s middle name. “Uncle Albert” and Arthur were always close and it is known that when “Uncle Albert” was dying, he asked for Arthur to come see him. Julia Ann apparently married in 1899, at 20, widower Edward Osborn, 28, of Reuben, Lobster Cove. No other Julia Ann appears in the records. Julia Ann may have died shortly after her marriage, which would explain why her son Arthur went to live with John and Jane Herridge when he was about two years old. It would also explain why there appears to be no mention of Edward and Julia Ann after their marriage.

NOTE: Verd Myles was a seaman all his life and spent many years as Skipper of deep-sea draggers. Tom Myles trained as a dentist and worked as a dentist for many years, until he decided it was becoming too stressful and a change was needed. He sold his practice, bought a boat and went fishing in BC. Several years before his death, Tom learned that he was in the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease and, in 2006, he took his own life. Tom was very intelligent and would have known what PD held in store for him in the years ahead. It is surmised, therefore, that he either felt he could not handle it, or that he did not want to put his wife through it.
