Note: James Dominaux was always known as “Jim Tom Anthony Dan”, using his own name “James”, his father’s name “Anthony”, and his grandfather’s name “Daniel.”
James Dominaux was fishing on the dragger Shelia Patricia when she caught on fire. The boat was going round in circles and it was impossible to get down into the engine room to do anything. Several men, including Bill Dodge and his son Max from Pool’s Cove, stayed on the boat and were rescued. Local tradition says that some men jumped overboard. James Dominaux, his cousin Charles Dominaux, and several other men were found dead in the lifeboat. The cause of death is not known but the lifeboat was apparently half full of water so exposure may have been a factor. With the boat going round in circles it is thought that some of them may have been struck and killed. James’ date of death is recorded as 30 April 1958, while Charles’ is listed as 01 May 1958, indicating that those in the lifeboat may not all have died at the same time.
Charles Dominaux was born 1934, son of Randell and Julia Dominix of Hare Harbour. Randell was brother of William Anthony, sons of Daniel Dominix of Long Island and Aimie of Hare Harbour.
“In loving memory of James Dominaux beloved husband of Dorothy Dominaux. Died April 30th 1958 aged 33 years. Another link is broken in our household Band. But a chain is forming in a better land.” … Headstone information, Stone’s Cove Cemetery.
