Anticipation

Breathing...deep and slowly...
As the slumber starts to thaw,
Pushing back the heavy cloak of dreams;
Waking...in the darkness...
As the hunger starts to gnaw,
In his eyes...anticipation gleams.

Rising...tall and stately...
From his secret resting place,
Smoothing out the wrinkles from his clothes;
Smiling...as his memory...
Conjures up a pretty face,
Pausing...as awareness through his flows.

Hearing...in the silence...
Footsteps treading soft above,
Knowing he will soon be at her side;
Visions...of a maiden...
Ripe and ready for his love,
Hoping...that tonight she'll be his bride.

Moving...sure and swiftly...
Breathing fast as he draws near,
Reaching for her with a whispered sigh;
Sensing...by her trembling...
She is still enslaved by fear,
In his eyes...anticipation dies.
